P-scales sit below Level 1 of the National Curriculum. They are level descriptions that can be used to assess progress for children aged 5 to 16 with SEN who cannot access the National Curriculum, and who are not working at National Curriculum levels. P scales give an indication of where these children are in their learning so that targets can be set and progress can be measured.
The “P” stands for performance. There are eight levels within the P scales; levels 4 to 8 lead into the relevant subject descriptors in Level 1 of the National Curriculum. Levels 1 to 3 are more developmental and are not subject specific.
